The Base Chakra

Let’s Talk about the journey back to the self through The Base Chakra!

Each chakra holds keys to unlock the potential of our soul through exploration into how we are holding onto beliefs and patterns we have created in this lifetime, as a child, intergenerationally, past lives and also the conscious evolution of humanity (which side note, we all do together).

Let’s dive into a little around the base chakra and see what arises in you as you read through these notes in reflection.

The Base Chakra: Grounding Your Energy

The base chakra, also known as the root chakra or Muladhara in Sanskrit, is the foundation of our energy system. Located at the base of the spine, it represents grounding, survival, and security. This chakra connects us to the Earth and is associated with our most primal needs: shelter, food, stability, and our sense of belonging in the world.

History & Significance

The concept of the chakra system originated in ancient India, with roots in both Hinduism and Buddhism. In these traditions, the base chakra serves as the root of the energy body, laying the groundwork for personal development and spiritual growth. It represents the element of Earth, signifying strength, structure, and our inherent connection to the physical world.

Energy Movement & Flow

The energy in the base chakra moves upward from the Earth, providing a solid foundation for the energy flow through the other chakras. When balanced, this chakra ensures stability and a sense of being grounded. An open root chakra allows energy to flow freely, supporting us in feeling safe, secure, and capable of handling life’s challenges. However, when blocked or imbalanced, one may feel disconnected, anxious, or fearful.

Recognising Imbalances in the Base Chakra

When the base chakra is out of balance, it can manifest in various physical, emotional, and mental signs, including:

  • Feeling anxious, insecure, or unsettled

  • Financial instability or fear around money

  • Difficulty focusing or feeling disorganised

  • Physical symptoms such as lower back pain, fatigue, or weight issues

To check whether your base chakra needs attention, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I feel safe and secure in my daily life?

  • Am I grounded and focused, or do I feel scattered?

  • How is my relationship with abundance and stability?

  • Do I trust in the support of the universe?

  • How do I handle uncertainty or instability in my life?

  • In what areas of my life do I need more security or support?

  • What can I do today to bring more stability into my routine?

Ways to Balance the Base Chakra

Here are some holistic ways to align and strengthen the base chakra:

1. Foods

Since the base chakra is associated with the Earth element, eating grounding, nourishing foods can help bring it back into alignment. Incorporate red and root vegetables like beets, carrots, and sweet potatoes. Proteins and hearty grains, such as beans, nuts, and quinoa, can also be beneficial. Think of foods that make you feel supported and energised.

2. Exercises

Physical movement is a powerful way to balance the base chakra. Engaging in grounding activities like yoga, walking barefoot on grass, or practising mindful movement helps to connect with the Earth’s energy. Yoga poses such as Tree Pose (Vrksasana), Warrior I (Virabhadrasana), and Mountain Pose (Tadasana) are particularly beneficial for rooting yourself to the ground and activating the root chakra.

3. Meditations

Guided meditations focused on grounding are excellent for rebalancing the base chakra. Visualise roots growing from your spine deep into the Earth, anchoring you and providing stability. Another option is to sit quietly and focus on your breath, imagining each inhale pulling in nurturing energy and each exhale releasing fear or instability. Chanting the mantra "LAM," which is associated with the root chakra, can also help clear and align this energy centre.

Colours & Stones

The base chakra is represented by the colour red, symbolising vitality, strength, and survival. Surround yourself with this colour through clothing, home decor, or visualisation to stimulate the chakra. Working with grounding stones like red jasper, black tourmaline, and hematite can help clear energetic blockages. Simply carrying these stones or placing them on your lower body can make a noticeable difference in your energy levels.

Emotional & Spiritual Energies

The base chakra governs our sense of belonging and our connection to the material world. When this energy centre is in balance, we feel secure, confident, and in control of our lives. We experience a sense of presence in the moment and feel supported by the universe.

What can you do?

By cultivating awareness of this foundational chakra, you can begin to restore balance in your physical and spiritual wellbeing, allowing yourself to feel grounded, supported, and ready to face life with confidence and peace.
