Anxiety & Autonomy

One of the things I love most about homeopathy is that it shows you where your autonomy has gone long before you consciously realise you’ve handed it over. People often think homeopathy is about symptoms — the stomach upset, the sleeplessness, the irritability, eczema, high blood pressure — and yes, it is absolutely fabulous for all the physical symptoms.
But homeopathy is actually about the pattern underneath those symptoms — the original misalignment that created the expression in the first place. And autonomy (or the lack of it) is one of the clearest patterns the body expresses.
When someone isn’t living from their own centre, their system starts compensating. You see it in the remedies every single day. That is why every remedy has an anxiety expression.
Let’s talk about this for a minute.
One of the most misunderstood parts of homeopathy is that people think anxiety is just “anxiety.”

But in homeopathy, anxiety has texture. It has flavour. It has behaviour. It has a story.
And that story tells you exactly where someone has lost autonomy inside themselves.
Every remedy has an anxiety expression because anxiety is simply the body saying: “I’m not in alignment with myself right now.”
But the way that misalignment shows up is different for everyone.
Some people express anxiety through over‑functioning — they get busier, sharper, more controlling, more reactive.
Some express it through under‑functioning — they collapse, withdraw, shut down, or become foggy.
Some express it through the gut — bloating, nausea, diarrhoea, food aversions, emotional ingestion.
Some express it through the throat — tightness, choking sensations, difficulty expressing themselves, fear of speaking.
Some express it through the nervous system — restlessness, insomnia, hyper‑vigilance, startle responses.
Some express it through the skin — itching, rashes, heat, irritation.
Some express it through the breath — sighing, shallow breathing, feeling like they can’t get a full inhale.
These aren’t random symptoms. They’re expressions of autonomy loss.
When someone’s anxiety shows up as over‑functioning, it’s usually because they’ve overridden their own timing.
When it shows up as under‑functioning, it’s because they’ve given their power away.
When it shows up in the gut, it’s because they’re processing emotional content that isn’t theirs.
When it shows up in the throat, it’s because they’re not speaking their truth.
When it shows up in the nervous system, it’s because they’re living in anticipation instead of presence.
When it shows up in the skin, it’s because their boundaries are overwhelmed.
When it shows up in the breath, it’s because they’re bracing for something that isn’t happening.
Homeopathy doesn’t treat the symptom — it treats the pattern underneath the symptom. It treats the moment autonomy was lost. It treats the way the body tried to compensate. It treats the story the person started living that wasn’t actually theirs.
This is why every remedy has an anxiety expression. Because every remedy is a map of what happens when someone stops living from their own centre.

Eight Homeopathic Anxiety Expressions — How Autonomy Loss Shows Up in the Field
Arsenicum — The anxiety of safety. This is the person whose autonomy collapses when they don’t feel held. Their anxiety shows up as control, micromanaging, and anticipating worst‑case scenarios because they don’t trust the environment.
Aurum — The anxiety of worth. This is the person whose autonomy collapses when they feel they’ve failed themselves or others. Their anxiety shows up as pressure, perfectionism, and fear of letting people down.
Nat Mur — The anxiety of emotional containment. This is the person whose autonomy collapses when they swallow their truth. Their anxiety shows up as withdrawal, internalising, and holding everything in the chest.
Lachesis — The anxiety of overflow. This is the person whose autonomy collapses when they feel trapped or restricted. Their anxiety shows up as intensity, urgency, talking fast, and needing space immediately.
Calc Carb — The anxiety of overwhelm. This is the person whose autonomy collapses when life feels too big. Their anxiety shows up as fear of change, fear of responsibility, and needing everything to slow down.
Silica — The anxiety of self‑doubt. This is the person whose autonomy collapses when they stop trusting their own capacity. Their anxiety shows up as hesitation, fear of being seen, and retreating from pressure.
Lac Humanum — The anxiety of belonging. This is the person whose autonomy collapses when they feel disconnected from others or themselves. Their anxiety shows up as longing, emotional sensitivity, and fear of rejection.
Tuberculinum Bovinum — The anxiety of confinement. This is the person whose autonomy collapses when they feel stuck, boxed in, or limited. Their anxiety shows up as restlessness, irritability, and a deep need to break free.

At the end of the day, anxiety isn’t the enemy — it’s information. It’s your body showing you exactly where you’ve stepped out of your own centre and into someone else’s expectations, timing, or emotional field. And autonomy is the process of coming back. Not in a dramatic, life‑changing way, but in the small, honest moments where you choose what’s actually true for you. Homeopathy simply helps your system remember that truth. It clears the noise, softens the compensation patterns, and brings you back into alignment with yourself so your body can stop bracing and start breathing again. Autonomy isn’t a concept — it’s a felt state. And when it returns, the anxiety expressions dissolve because the story underneath them finally changes.

Warmest,
Martine
