Conjunctivitis in Little Explorers

It’s such a common part of childhood—red, watery, irritated eyes as children dive headfirst into life. Sometimes it’s from dust, pollen, viral exposure, or overstimulated immune systems. Other times, it can reflect emotional or energetic imbalances: moments when boundaries are fuzzy, or something isn't being seen clearly.
In homeopathy, we don’t just treat the eye—we listen to the whole picture. Here are a few remedies to help differentiate:
Pulsatilla
For gentle children who crave closeness, their emotional tone is changeable and sweet. Eye discharge is thick, yellow-green, but their need for tenderness often overshadows the physical symptoms. Their clinginess often intensifies when unwell.
Euphrasia
Marked by stinging, watery tears and bland nasal discharge. The child may blink often and avoid sunlight. This picture often accompanies viral conjunctivitis, where the eyes do most of the expressing.
Belladonna
Rapid onset. Eyes are hot, red, glassy, and reactive to light. The child may have a flushed face and heightened sensitivity to noise, touch, and movement. The inflammation almost announces itself.
Hepar sulph
Painful sensitivity, especially to wind or cold air. Even gently wiping the eyes may trigger a strong protest. There may be yellow discharge and emotional rawness — a hypersensitive child on every level.
Sulphur
Eyes that itch, burn, and demand constant rubbing. The child is curious, energetic, sometimes a little rebellious. Often warm-blooded and restless, they may push back against authority and routines, but their immune system has a fiery wisdom of its own.
Calc carb
A slower-moving, more cautious child — solid, thoughtful, sometimes anxious. The eye complaint might be mild but persistent, and may reappear during transitions or periods of growth. The body often reflects a need for anchoring.
Merc sol
Thick, acrid discharge, profuse drooling, offensive sweat. The child may appear pale, easily fatigued, and distressed by extremes in temperature. A picture of inner confusion or toxicity, needing clarity.
For adults, especially those catching conjunctivitis from a beloved child, Ruta graveolens may offer support — especially if eye strain, overuse, and exhaustion play a role.
Don’t forget that animals show similar expressions — runny eyes in dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, even horses. Discharges, blinking, irritation — homeopathy often reveals a shared vocabulary between species.

Some people find colloidal silver helpful as a gentle energetic support, either topically or internally. It may assist with clearing and soothing, particularly when used early.
Because so many remedies can match similar symptoms, I offer 15-minute acute consults to help parents or carers navigate the nuances. A remedy well matched can not only relieve the eyes—it can bring deeper balance to the whole system.
Love,
Martine
